Americans Smash Record for 100-Mile Ultra Race in Antarctica

November 8, 2019

The Antarctic Ice Ultra is the ultimate test of endurance, held on the frozen continent of Antarctica. The 2024 edition marked a historic first, offering runners the choice of three race distances: 100 miles, 100 kilometers, and 50 miles. This unique event pushed athletes to their limits in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

Competitors faced a formidable challenge, running on treacherous snow and ice with temperatures starting at a bone-chilling -17°C. With fierce katabatic winds, the mercury dropped to an even more brutal -25°C. At an altitude of 600 meters, the race wasn't just a test of physical endurance—it was a battle against the harsh, unforgiving elements in the heart of Antarctica's vast, icy wilderness.

Given the extreme conditions, personal bests were unlikely, but the event was less about speed and more about resilience and self-reliance. Participants were forced to dig deep, relying on their mental and physical fortitude to navigate the stunning, silent expanse of Antarctica’s icy landscape.

For safety, the race took place on a 4.2km loop around Ultima Base Camp, where competitors had the option to take breaks in the mess tent for food and hydration.

Held in Eastern Antarctica at Ultima Base Camp, the race saw 15 international competitors took part. The event began at 09:39 UTC on Thursday, November 7th, 2024, marking a groundbreaking moment in ultra-endurance racing.

After 23 hours, 22 minutes and 57 seconds Paul Johnston and Roberto Sembiante both from America crossed the finish line and smashed the World record by more than an hour for the 100 mile in Antarctica.

In the 100km Ultra class, the Chinese runner Yusheng NI, fresh from his 2 hours and 45 minutes New York Marathon on Sunday crossed the line in an amazing 10 hours, 40 minutes and 15 seconds.

The event is set to happen again in November 2025.
